iEducate’s purpose is to inspire leadership and enrich communities through educational service. We prepare and equip college students to tutor high-needs students in local Title I elementary schools to improve student outcomes while providing invaluable work experience and credentials, strengthening Houston’s teacher pipeline. Since 2013, iEducate has engaged over 2,000 tutors to support more than 40,000 Houston elementary students in over 200 Houston-area schools.
While we aim to provide instructional support that has an immediate effect on academic gains, we recognize a broader systemic issue in education: high teacher turnover and a declining pipeline of diverse, certified educators. Nearly half of new hires in Houston are uncertified, and many leave the profession soon after. This lack of preparation reduces student achievement, creating gaps that our tutoring program attempts to fill. However, by addressing only short-term needs, we risk perpetuating a cycle of untrained teachers unable to sustain long-term student success.
Our solution is to continue offering scalable, low-cost tutoring services while using that work experience to catalyze interest and strengthen credentialing in the teaching profession. By helping tutors build on their real classroom experience, we increase the likelihood that we’re developing high-quality teachers who will remain in the profession and stay engaged in their community schools for the long term. Our dual mission includes:
Employing tutors to provide targeted small-group academic support to help close early learning gaps, ensuring that all students receive quality instruction tailored to their needs.
Cultivating a pipeline of educators by creating pathways for future teachers to develop core competencies, complete an Educator Preparation Program (EPP), and contribute long-term to strengthening high-quality public schools.
